In the two weeks leading up to Christmas, I had the privilege of painting two portraits for a Christmas surprise. My client had taken several photos of his adorable kids running through fountains, water splashing and looks of pure joy on their faces. Although the photos were taken from a distance and did not capture much detail in their faces, they did capture this moment of pure exultation. Painting the portraits was a process of conveying their likeness, but more importantly conveying that particular moment in time -- joy, laughter, exhilaration. My goal was to create portraits that were whimsical in nature and playful in color and brush stroke. I wanted to convey the magical experience that this brother and sister were having together. My client and I communicated solely by email. He was able to describe to me what he wanted the paintings to convey -- the exultation on his kids' faces. It was a thrill to deliver them they day before Christmas Eve, to finally meet him in person and see the happiness on his face.
